Pregnancy Pain Treatment

Low back pain and pelvic pain are very common in pregnant women. Some common treatments for the muscle aches and pain such as drugs, physiotherapy and exercise, are sometime unsuitable for pregnant women.

Osteopathy is a safe and effective way of dealing with common pregnancy symptoms, treatment can help a patient during pregnancy as it’s a gentle way of aiding the body to adapt to the natural changes taking place

Osteopathic treatment can help reduce the pains by relieving lower back & leg pain, neck & shoulder pain and post natal problems of the pelvis etc.

The shifting stresses and strains of pregnancy, together with the hormonal influences caused by a protein called relaxin on ligaments and joints, can highlight physical problems with the patient often having to find new ways to walk, sit and sleep as a result of the changes in size and shape often causes aches and pains.

Pain in the lower abdomen or groin  is often diagnosed as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) or Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction. This can make walking and  moving extremely painful. SPD is often misdiagnosed in pregnancy and the majority of patients with these symptoms respond very well to Osteopathic treatment.

After nine months of pregnancy patients now have to lift carry or breast feed the baby leading to lower back or shoulder and neck pain. Osteopathy is there to get you back in shape quickly and help you with the stresses and strains of early motherhood.

Advice for pregnant mothers

  • Take care whilst lifting or carrying, especially other children. Do not carry a small child on either hip for any length of time.
  • When standing keep your bottom tucked in reducing strain on the lower back and try to have an even amount of weigh on both legs, it would also be useful to sit down whilst dressing to avoid standing on one leg.
  • When seated, sit with your back straight, use a cushion for support and never cross your legs.
  • When lay on your side place a pillow under the bump and a pillow between your knees to provide support.
  • When getting in and out of a car or turning in bed keep your knees together.

SPORTS INJURIES

Osteopathic treatments are particularly successful in helping sports injuries and rehabilitating sports men and women in order to get them back to their chosen sport as quickly as possible.
